What is Lift License?

Electrical Lift Installations in commercial, residential, office complexes, etc., (excluding the lift covered under the Factories Act, 1948) are inspected and licenses are issued/renewed to secure protection to the persons using the lifts and safe working of lifts.

The Owner of the Place where the Lift is to be erected shall

1. Ensure the Lift Erection Company is approved by Chief Electrical Inspector to Govt., Chennai -32
2. Duly fill in Form ‘A’ in consultation with the Lift Company
3. Enclose triplicate copies of drawings duly signed by the Applicant and Authorized Person of Lift Company, showing

  • The layout of the lift erection
  • Plan
  • Section Elevation
  • Arrangement of Doors
  • Lift well Enclosure
  • Size and position of the machine relating to the lift well
  • Position of hoisting machine
  • Number of floors to be served and total travel

Why this License is Required?

The license is a mandatory requirement for you to ensure the safety, performance, and reliability of lifts in your buildings. If the application is incomplete in any respect, the applicant is not considered eligible for the examination.

Application on a prescribed form ‘A’
The drawings of the Lift installation
Attested copies of experience certificates
Attested copies of Previous Certificates of Competency Class II issued by the board
Original Treasury receipt
The application must be signed in the presence of the Employer/ Magistrate/ Gazetted Officer/ Member of Parliament/ Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal councilor.
One recent passport size photograph duly attested may be affixed in the form & another should be properly attached along with application.
Two self-addressed stamped envelopes of size 9″ x4″

Who can issue the Lift License?

Electrical Lift Installations in commercial, residential, office complexes, etc., (excluding the lift covered under the Factories Act, 1948) are inspected and licenses are issued / renewed to secure protection to the persons using the lifts and safe working of lifts.
Lift licenses, as of today, are required only in ten States including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi. There are guidelines given for obtaining licenses for existing buildings as well.
The owner of the place who is permitted to erect a Lift, on completion of erection shall apply for a license, by filling up the form-C, form-D, form-E and submitting it to Respective Divisional Electrical Inspector.
